In fact, the new Ovi Maps for N97 was delivered one day earlier than promised, and can be found “through the software update client in the device.” Thanks, Nokia, but don’t forget your N900 fans, too.

What is a Blogging
Jan 24th
I heard about this word “blogging” but what this really means to you? I don’t even understand how this word form into a writing of different problems and solution into our present lives or showing your emotions on things and people around you. Environment where you are in, made you become a good blogger but you don’t know how to start writing it. You don’t need to be a good English talker (if it stops you from writing) as long as you communicate it well and understood by your readers.
Blog means an online journal where an individual, group, or corporation presents a record of activities, thoughts, or beliefs. Some blogs operate mainly as news filters, collecting various online sources and adding short comments and internet links.Other blogs concentrate on presenting original material. In addition, many blogs provide a forum to allow visitors to leave comments and interact with the publisher. “To blog” is the act of composing material for a blog. Materials are largely written, but pictures, audio, and videos are important elements of many blogs. The “blogsphere” is the online universe of blogs. (Britannica)
To start with, make sure that you have an idea in mind and try writing it in draft. As you go along, read back what you have written and edit it. Whether it is not complete yet, you can edit it and add up everything you want to put in that blog. Compose and write your blogs with your OWN WORDS. Avoid copying word for word from any article when you want to publish a blog as some are copy righted. You can always surf around the internet world and get an idea on how some people write their own blogs. Personally, I don’t even have an idea on how to be involve in a blog world but as I browse the net, I found some funny, interesting and most important is educational writings as it could be. I do love reading but writing is not my forte. I don’t also give any comments because most of the time, I gave negative word if not good one but I always make sure that everything is an encouraging comments as I could not make a perfect writing on my own, that’s why I am contented with reading blogs. This is a dream come true for me but still hoping for a better writing in the future.
3G Mobile Encryption Cracked
Jan 16th
Not too long ago, we heard that the GSM cellphone encryption was cracked and users were vulnerable to attacks. After GSM 64-bit A5/1 algorithm was compromised, the 3G algorithm was likely to follow shortly after.
Based on the reports about the 3G encryption cracking, the network relies on a KASUMI system, which only needs a couple of hours for a well-coordinated hacker to crack. 3G uses the KASUMI encryption, which processes 64-bit blocks using a 128-bit key.
What exactly does this mean to 3G users? We’ll, fortunately for everyone, the crack was found by researchers that used a highly complex mathematical equation and the exploit isn’t available to the public. The researchers said that their un-optimized single PC can recover 96 key bits in a matter of a few minutes and can complete the full 128 bit key in less than two hours.
Consumers shouldn’t be worried about this just yet, as CDMA has a MISTY encryption prepared. The MISTY encryption is a more complicated algorithm, which in theory should be harder to crack to a would-be hacker. Until someone else comes up with a method to crack the 3G algorithm, users data should be safe.

Saudi Arabia: Family Visa linked with Salary
Dec 28th
The Foreign Ministry will issue permanent resident visas for wives and children of expatriate workers in the Kingdom, without considering their profession, Al-Yaum Arabic daily has reported.
“The ministry’s office in Riyadh issued such recruitment visas for three days last week and stopped it temporarily. It is expected that the ministry would resume the service next month,” a ministry source told the paper.
The news is a relief for many of the seven million expatriate workers, who are unable to bring their families on resident visas due to their profession written on their iqamas.
The Foreign Ministry and the Recruitment Office only issued permanent resident and visit visas to those in white-collar jobs such as engineers, doctors and executives. The Al-Yaum report said the ministry would only look at the financial status of the applicant. “The family visa is no more linked with profession,” the source said. He said the ministry stopped processing applications in order to implement the new criteria. “This is a great news for thousands of professionals like me who are unable to bring their wives and children to the Kingdom because of the profession in iqama,” said Shabeer Ali, a computer engineer based in Jeddah.
Ali said he has been trying to bring his family to the Kingdom ever since his marriage. “Until now I could not, because they look at the profession on my iqama, which is an electrician. I had presented my Masters degree certificate in computer science attested by the Saudi Embassy, as well as my salary certificate, but they rejected my application,” he said.
He said he had never known about this problem before coming to the Kingdom.
“I know that there are thousands of expatriate workers who are highly qualified and earn good salaries but cannot bring their families because of their profession. I take this opportunity to thank the Saudi government for changing this policy and consider it a great blessing from God.” The Arabic daily said the ministry’s branches in Jeddah and Dammam have not implemented the new system as they have not been informed about the changed criteria.
Over the past three weeks, the ministry’s Riyadh office was issuing visit visas to all expatriate workers for their families without considering their profession.
K.C.M. Abdullah, a freelance journalist based in Riyadh, told Arab News that hundreds of people, including laborers, farmers and construction workers had benefited.
“Now they have stopped issuing visas to drivers and other house servants,” he pointed out. Some people claimed the visa rules were relaxed to mark the return of Crown Prince Sultan to the Kingdom after a yearlong medical trip.
Abdullah said the ministry used to accept around 800 applicants daily, adding over 1,000 people stood in the queue from early in the morning to present their applications made through the ministry’s website.
He said the revised service started a week before the Eid Al-Adha holidays.
After hearing the news of the relaxation in visa rules a large number of Indian workers approached the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and consulate in Jeddah to include names of their spouses in their passports.
Indian missions are now issuing new passports after including spouse names. People who want to include the names of spouses should attach attested marriage certificates. Those who have married recently should register their marriages by producing relevant documents.

Create a Custom Internet Radio Station
Dec 15th
Your IT department won’t let you copy MP3s onto your work PC, and your iPod won’t hold your massive music collection, but you need to listen to tunes while you toil away at the day’s labor. What’s an audiophile to do? The answer is simple: Stream the collection you have stored on your rig at home to your PC at work.
Sure, you could fire up a streaming service such as Pandora, Last.fm, or any one of the thousands of radio stations that simulcast their programming on the Internet, but then you’d have to either listen to a fairly random playlist based on your typical listening habits or to someone else’s playlist instead of your own. It can be fun to hear new tracks and find new artists, until you get stuck with a band you just hate—like Linkin Park. Sometimes you just want to fire up a favorite album and listen to the whole thing from start to finish. That’s where your own personal streaming station comes into play.
It’s easy to build a private streaming radio station that you can connect to from anywhere on the net using free software and services. We wouldn’t suggest deleting your Pandora account and just jamming to your private station, but personalized web radio is a great alternative for days when other streaming services just don’t cut it.
What you Need:
* Two PCs
* SqueezeCenter software ( Free, www.slimdevices.com )
* A DynDNS Account ( Free, www.dyndns.com )
* DynDNS Updater ( Free, www.dyndns.com )
* Awesome Music
1. Install SqueezeCenter

The secret sauce in our streaming scheme is SqueezeCenter, the open-source software that powers the Squeezebox. Formerly known as SlimServer, SqueezeCenter extends beyond the basic chores you’d expect from streaming-box software. For starters, it works with more than just the Squeezebox—you can stream your music to any PC with a copy of WinAmp, iTunes, or Windows Media Player installed. The application serves as an impressive web-based music jukebox that you can use to navigate your library and play virtually any DRM-free music format ever created.
The first order of business is to select the rig to install SqueezeCenter on. Remember that it will need to run 24/7, so you probably don’t want to use your monster gaming rig for a server—unless you enjoy paying $300 a month for electricity. We recommend an older laptop or another rig that sips power.
Once that’s decided, download and install SqueezeCenter. The installer will prompt you for the location of your music files and playlists, and then it will scan your library for supported music files, including MP3, FLAC, M4A, OGG, and WMA files. The scanning process can take a long time, especially if you have a massive collection, so now would be a great time to step away from the PC and go for a walk.
2. Configure SqueezeCenter

Before you can stream, you need to configure SqueezeCenter to accept connections from other PCs. The software allows password-free access to the web interface by default, but only from the computer it’s installed on. We have to change that.
Open your web browser and connect to http://127.0.0.1:9000. Then click the Settings button in the lower-right corner of the interface and select the Advanced tab. Pull down the menu and select the Security tab. You’ll want to enable password protection and set up a username and password for access.
Next, you need to configure the allowed IP addresses. It’s a good idea to give the PCs on your home network access to the SqueezeCenter interface so you can change playlists remotely. To determine the IP addresses that get access to SqueezeCenter, you need to find out what IP range your home network uses. The easiest way to find your IP on XP or Vista is to open a command line (Start > Run > cmd.exe) and type ipconfig. You should see a list of your active network connections, but most home users will see one IP address. To enable access to other computers, you need to tell SqueezeCenter which IP addresses are safe by using a wildcard. Take your IP address and replace the numbers following the final period with an * and put that number into SqueezeCenter’s Allowed IP Addresses field. Then click Apply.
3. Configure Your Router

At this point, SqueezeCenter should be properly configured to work on your internal network, but machines outside the loving embrace of your router won’t be able to access the web interface or the convenient streaming file. To enable external access, you’ll need to open up your router’s configuration interface and configure port forwarding for the ports SqueezeCenter uses.
Your router’s IP address will usually be the same as the default gateway that ipconfig displays. Type that address into your web browser and log into the router using the password you created when you first configured your router. Next, you’ll need to look for a section labeled Port or Application Forwarding. It’s usually in the Advanced section of the router’s control panel. If your router lets you specify port forwarding based on a rig’s name that will update as your computer’s IP address changes, you can simply specify the rig that will be used for streaming, set it to forward incoming TCP traffic to port 9000 on the server rig, and save your settings.
If your router doesn’t let you specify port forwarding by rig name, you’ll need to configure your server’s IP address manually. Open your Network control panel, right-click your network connection’s icon, and select Properties. Double-click TCP/IP and you can manually specify the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS server info. Your default gateway is the same IP as your router and the subnet mask is usually 255.255.255.0. You’ll need to pick an IP for yourself; most routers reserve the range from x.x.x.2-x.x.x.99 for static IPs. You can choose any unused number in that range. You should be able to get your DNS server info from the WAN or Internet setup section in your router’s control panel. Once you’ve set up a static IP, go back to your router’s forwarding menu and forward the appropriate ports to your new address.
4. Set Up DynDNS

You should now be able to connect to SqueezeCenter from outside your home network, but only if you know your external IP address, which your provider can dynamically change from time to time. We’re going to use the free DynDNS service to automatically forward traffic from a custom URL to our home network—the program updates the IP address every time your provider changes it. Before you proceed, you’ll need to set up a free account at www.dyndns.com.
Once you’ve activated your account, log into the site and go to My Account. Then click the Add Host Services link and select a hostname and URL. We went with radiowill.kicks-ass.net Input the IP address currently assigned by your ISP (which you can get from www.whatismyip.com). Be sure to save your settings!
5. Install the DynDNS Updater

Next, you need to download the DynDNS Updater, which you can download from www.dyndns.com, as well. Install it on your server machine and follow the prompts. It will ask you for your DynDNS username and password and then ask you which of your DynDNS domains you want forwarded. Make sure you check the Enable Automatic Updates option; we recommend you run the Updater as a service, which will force it to start when Windows starts whether a user is logged in or not.
That’s it! To listen to your stream, open your favorite MP3 player and go to the Open Stream option (the shortcut is Ctrl+U in both iTunes and Windows Media Player). The URL you’ll use is http://yourcustomdomaingoeshere:9000/. Once you’ve connected to the stream, open the SqueezeCenter interface in your web browser using the same URL. Then you can select the tracks you want to listen to and rock out!
Stream to Your Pals—Legally!
Now your stream is set up, but your friends want in on the Internet radio action. Unfortunately, copyright law doesn’t allow you to legally stream your tunes to anyone but yourself. If you want to stream to others, you can—but you have to pay. To get a license to broadcast, go to www.ascap.com/weblicense/. If you’re choosing songs for your friends yourself and not running ads, you’re eligible to use Schedule A of the Non-Interactive 5.0 ASCAP license, which costs $288 a year. Or you could just tell them to make their own station.
Windows Mobile 7 Phones to Launch in Late 2010
Dec 13th
Phil Moore, Head of Microsoft Mobile Division in UK has confirmed that phones with Windows Mobile 7 wont be available until late next year. He announced this in a Q&A session held at the ‘Connect’ technology summit in London. This news means that we are not going to see handsets with Windows Mobile 7 anytime before last quarter of 2010.
It has been put back until late next year but it is definitely coming. You’re going to see a lot more on Windows Mobile 7. Giving the enterprise users and consumers what they want will be part of Windows Mobile 7. You’ll get flexibility on a much easier touch UI.
Windows Mobile 7 has been in works since late 2005. This is not the first time it has been delayed. With this latest confirmation by Phil Moore, we may not even see any glimpse of Windows Mobile 7 at the upcoming ‘Mobile World Congress 2010’ which is going to be held in February next year.
If you are looking to get a new Windows phone now, HTC HD2 is your best bet. There is no point in waiting for Windows Mobile 7 devices as they wont be appearing any time before Q4 2010. HTC HD2 is by far the best Windows phone that is available in the market with 4.3 inches capacitive multi-touch display, powered by 1Ghz Snapdragon processor. And if the rumors are to be believed, HD2 may get Windows Mobile 7 upgrade, once it is available in late 2010.
Google Launch Public DNS Service
Dec 7th
Google have just launched a public DNS service via their blog where the service is positioned as part of Google’s “effort to make the web faster”. DNS in a nutshell is like a switchboard for the internet, and (normally) your ISP provides your DNS server which tells your browser how to find other websites. Google’s DNS service offers to speedup this process by providing faster DNS lookups and hence a faster internet.
Instructions on how to use Google’s DNS servers at a PC or router level can be found here. Before you make the change though, you might want to spare a thought as to why Google have really launched this ‘generous’ offer. If you route your traffic via Google’s DNS servers, they will be able to see and potentially track ALL of your internet usage. Not just usage when you visit a google property or use the google search engine, but all usage as all traffic will be routed from your PC or router via Google. This usage data is obviously worth a fortune and there is currently a battle going on between ISPs, browsers and other companies to control this DNS traffic as opportunities exist to monetise this traffic, particularly DNS errors (e.g. you type a sitename wrong like goooogle.com) and HTTP errors (e.g. 404 page not found – search engines and ISPs want to take over these pages as well). All of these parties are fighting to get to this traffic first; ISPs in tandem with partners like paxfire, barefruit and infospace at the network level, browsers in their settings and now Google by encouraging users to change their DNS settings manually.
Google Public DNS IP addresses
The Google Public DNS IP addresses are as follows:
- 8.8.8.8
- 8.8.4.4
You can use either number as your primary or secondary DNS server. You can specify both numbers, but do not specify one number as both primary and secondary.
Google have publicly stated that they won’t work at the network level as part of their ‘do no evil’ mantra. However intercepting DNS traffic to me seems to me to be very close to doing so. Disappointingly on the Google pages there is no mention of what Google intend to do with the traffic data that they will obtain from users who make the change. I personally don’t mind as I have nothing to hide online and I welcome more relevant advertising, so I’ve made the change but others may not want to make this change as they are not keen on Google’s latest attempt at worldwide domination.
